There have been numerous times when you hear about people who have destroyed their lives and lives of people they love, merely because they have become dependent on drugs. But there is one question which everyone actively seeks an answer to in these situations, and that is the reason behind drug use. Is there a unifying reason behind such behavior, or is it a combination of various reasons and events which lead people to devote their lives to substance abuse?
Of course, each story is different, but coming in contact with numerous people who have done drugs in the past one thing is striking, and that is the effect other people have on them. So, the main problem seems to be the peer pressure that you should at least try using drugs. If you are a parent or a teacher you should also remember that it is not anything uncharacteristic for adolescents in general. You must keep in mind that what is characteristic about adolescence is that children seek out their peers and care much more about their opinion than about the opinion of adults which surround them. Once you realize this, it is important to actively monitor the social contact that the adolescent has; as this can help prevent numerous problems. Also, as educators, it is important to bring to attention to younger adolescents that this is not something that is cool or desirable. The best way to do this is to let adolescents educate their peers about drugs and drug use. Once their older peers disapprove of such actions, it sends a positive message to younger adolescents as well. It is important to promote positive features and influence adolescents in a positive way. Much of the talk about prevention seems to go unnoted if it is given by someone who is an adult because they do not even think that their opinion matters.
